FAQ

El Camino Products

1/ How many Country and Small Step options are there?

There are 240 Country Step options for your El Camino. We didn’t think that having only Steps of the independent countries was specific enough. For example, a United Kingdom Step would be way too broad for a trip just around England or just around Scotland. Also, when creating the Country Step collection, we really wanted to avoid getting political in any way! Our extensive range of Steps is there to provide you with as many options as possible that will allow you to make your El Camino more personal and meaningful.

As for our Small Steps, this collection is always growing. These are any places around the world that aren't countries, such as cities, states, or landmarks. Small Steps are created from your ideas! If there’s a Small Step that you’d like to have introduced, please let us know and if there’s enough demand for it – it will be added!

3/ Which countries belong to each Region Step?

There are no rules! The choice is completely up to you! If you’ve been to Turkey and can’t decide whether to choose the Asia or Europe Region Step – choose your favourite colour, the one you don’t have yet, or both! The decision is all yours.

4/ What’s engraved on the glass Steps?

Each Region, Sea, Animal and Ocean Step is engraved with the EC logo. We love the colours so thought that it would be awesome for the Regions, Seas, Animals and Oceans to be represented by the colour of the Step, rather than any writing. Have the colours do the talking!

5/ How do I know what size El Camino bracelet to get?

It’s all personal preference how you wear your El Camino, some people like the loose look and others prefer it to be snug, some people will have 15 Steps and some will have 3.

Here’s how to ensure you get the perfect fit:

Singles:
1/ Wrap a piece of string snugly around the broadest part of your wrist.
2/ Measure the piece of string to determine your wrist size.
3/ We suggest a Single El Camino that is 2-3cm bigger than your wrist size.

For Example: Tim's wrist size is 19cm, so he'd choose a bracelet that is 21cm or 22cm depending if he wanted a snug or loose fit.

Doubles:
1/ Wrap a piece of string snugly around the broadest part of your wrist.
2/ Measure the piece of string to determine your wrist size.
3/ Multiply wrist size by two.
4/ We suggest a Double El Camino that is 3-6cm bigger than your doubled wrist size.

For Example: Sarah's wrist size is 16cm and her doubled wrist size is 32cm. She'd choose an 18cm/19cm Single and a 36cm/38cm Double, depending if she wanted a snug or loose fit.

Bracelets are measured from the very tip of the clasp to the very end of the loop.

Remember your El Camino will become a little tighter as you start to add more Steps, please keep that in mind when choosing the right size! If you need any help, please feel free to get in touch – we’d be more than happy to help you determine the perfect fit.

6/ What sizes are El Camino necklaces available in?

El Camino necklaces are available in one size. They are adjustable from very small up to 100cm.

7/ How many Steps can I fit on my El Camino bracelet?

The amount of Steps you can put on your El Camino all depends on its length and how you like to wear your bracelets.

For adult single bracelets, we say 12-16 Steps with spacers, for adult double bracelets we say 16-24 Steps with spacers and for junior bracelets we say 8-10 Steps with spacers - these numbers allow for movement and show some of the bracelet. Some people wear their El Camino with more Steps though, so it all comes down to personal preference.

If you like the stacked look, you could always split your Steps between one, two, or even three El Camino bracelets. This is always a good option too if you can’t decide which colour to choose or want to divide your travels up in meaningful way – for example, solo travels on one and family on the other!

8/ How many Steps can I fit on my El Camino necklace?

The amount of Steps you can put on a necklace will depend on how you plan on wearing it. Though as a maximum, we suggest 20 Steps + 20 Spacers.

You may be able to physically fit more, but like the bracelets, it just comes down to personal preference. You may only want to keep a few special ones close to your heart!

9/ How many Steps can I fit on my El Camino anklet?

For everyday comfort reasons, we recommend no more than 12-15 Steps with spacers on your El Camino anklet. These numbers allow for movement and to show off the anklet. However, it really just comes down to personal preference and you'll be able to fit a lot more Steps and spacers on if you'd like.

10/ What do the El Camino Spacers represent?

Nothing specific! They can act as fillers on the bracelet, which creates a different look. They just help to add a little extra character! Remember, we include one free spacer with each Country, Small, Adventure and Custom Step.

11/ What can I have written on a Custom Step?

Anything within the character limit! You can have up to 32 characters made on your Custom Steps – any characters found on the standard keyboard! Unfortunately, we’re unable to have symbols or pictures made on the Steps. Please go to the Custom Steps section of our website, where you will find more information and ideas for customising your personal Steps.

12/ What happens when my El Camino bracelet or necklace is full?

Keep on going, keep on travelling, and carry on collecting… Start a new El Camino to represent your continued journey. You can continue to wear your full El Camino in addition to your new one. Or leave your full El Camino somewhere safe, maybe somewhere on display so you can be reminded of your amazing travel experiences. As you travel around the world, your El Camino jewellery will become full of stories.

13/ How do I know if my El Camino is a genuine El Camino product?

El Camino products are only available from this website. If you purchased it from anywhere else, it’s not a genuine El Camino!

El Camino products are of the highest quality, from our tightly knotted extremely durable bracelets to the surgical grade stainless steel we use for the Steps and clasps.

14/ What materials are El Camino products made with, are they durable?

- El Camino bracelet/necklace – Top secret, extremely strong El Camino Cord!
- El Camino Country, Small, Custom, Adventure Steps and Clasps – Surgical Stainless Steel (316L).
- El Camino Animal, Region, Sea and Ocean Steps – Glass.
- El Camino Spacers – Sustainably sourced wood and coconut.

We use only the best materials and our products are made to be extremely durable, designed to withstand all the wears and tears we encounter on our travels.

15/ What is the best way to care for my El Camino products?

It depends how you want them to look!

If you want to keep them in their mint condition there are extra measures you can take.

Individually…
Cleaning your stainless steel clasp and Steps is easy, just use warm water and very well diluted, mild soap with a cloth to remove any dirt or grease.

Stainless Steel can scratch, so avoid subjecting it to situations where it could get scratched.

El Camino bracelets/necklaces are strong but not indestructible! You should avoid placing unreasonable amounts of stress on it or letting it come into contact with sharp or abrasive objects. Also, any non El Camino accessories on your El Camino jewellery may cause damage and will void your warranty.

Getting your bracelet/necklace wet is perfectly fine, it's extremely durable. However, we'd recommend against regular contact with soaps, shampoos, salt water or chemicals, such as chlorine, as this could cause your El Camino products to age more quickly than they otherwise would. Having said this, some people never take theirs off and are loving the way it looks. It all depends on whether you'd like to preserve the original appearance of your El Camino for as long as possible, if this is the case, we'd suggest not getting it wet. Some like the worn look though!
